Albanian-American Bar Association of Michigan (AABAM)

The Albanian-American Bar Association of Michigan (AABAM) is a special-purpose bar association recognized by the State Bar of Michigan. It serves Albanian-American lawyers and law students, with most members of Albanian descent residing in the greater Detroit metropolitan area.

AABAM was established in 2011 and recognized by the State Bar of Michigan in March 2012 as a recently-formed specialty bar. It was founded by seven members and grew to 34 members in less than six months after its formation, making it one of the newer bar associations in the state.

The association was created to meet the growing presence and needs of Albanian-American attorneys and law students in Michigan. Its stated purposes include aiding Michigan's Albanian community with legal issues, improving the Albanian-American legal community, and providing networking, scholarship opportunities, and professional development to people of Albanian descent in the legal profession.

On the ground, AABAM members work with legal clinics at Michigan law schools, where they serve as translators and provide legal aid to immigrants and local residents whose primary language is Albanian. The association also participates in diversity events hosted by the State Bar of Michigan, which it uses to strengthen collegiality among members and connect with the broader community.

Because its membership base sits in southeastern Michigan — a region with one of the largest Albanian populations in the United States — AABAM's events and resources are most beneficial to those living in that part of the state, and the group has framed part of its mission as fostering greater understanding of the Albanian community in metro Detroit.
